What is Reiki?
Reiki is not massage. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. “Rei” means “Free Passage” or “Transcendental Spirit”, with “Ki” meaning “Vital Life Force” or “Universal Life Energy”. Reiki is performed by a practitioner attuned to the healing or master level of Reiki. It utilizes “energy” which is passed from the Reiki practitioner to the receiver where it is used for the higher good of the receiver. It is an energy that always works for the greater good, and can do no harm nor be used for any reasons other than good. People who have received Reiki have experienced great calm and relaxation, increased energy and motivation, release of negative energy, pain relieve and so much more.
Reiki has three levels: Level 1, Level 2 and Master/Teacher (level 3). To practice at a certain level the practitioner must be attuned to that level.
Level 1 Reiki is a healing level, where the practitioner must be in the same room as the receiver. Usually the receiver is lying down on a table (massage tables are frequently used.) while the Reiki practitioner uses a series of hand positions on or just above the receiver to allow the flow of Reiki energy to enter and flow through the receiver.
Level 2 Reiki adds power or healing symbols and the Reiki practitioner is able to perform distance Reiki. This can be done while in the same location, but across the space they are in, or from two different locations. A practitioner may offer Reiki to a horse for example from their home or studio while the horse is in its pen or pasture in another location. Distance is not an issue, they can be in different countries and the Reiki energy will find its path to the animal.
Reiki Master/Teacher is the highest level of Reiki. Someone attuned to this level is able to attune another for the 3 levels of Reiki, may teach classes and certify new practitioners.
There are several variations of Reiki, Usui the original Reiki as brought to the United States. Practitioners have taken the guiding principles of Usui Reiki and added rituals or other healing forms based on their religion, believes, ideals, or other skills or talents. These can include the use of meditation, crystals, angels, aromatherapy, prayer to a certain “God” and the list goes on.
